The end of the 2008 MLB season was an amazing ride that saw a lot of historical firsts and lasts. First off lets start with the ending of the season which in case you have not heard by now ended with the Phillies winning the World Series in 5 games plus. The plus of course is in reference to the first ever suspension of a World Series game due to weather. Which by the way would have been fine had they decided to stop it at the end of an inning instead of the middle of the sixth like they did. Thanks Bud Selig that was a great head scratcher, WTF?
The game finally finished 48 hours later to the delight of the ever patient Philadelphia fans who have waited 28 years for another World Series title. The other impossible first to make it all the way to the end were the Cinderella team Rays. To go from never having a winning season in their history to a season that ended with them just 3 games short of winning the World Series was a great story for baseball that kept fans excited through out the year.
Another first that I thought would never see the light of day in Major League Baseball was the inclusion of instant replay. Instant replay in baseball is here and most likely it will be here to stay, hopefully just for home runs in question. I don’t mind the instant replay and what they have designated it’s use for I did not agree with starting this new rule in the middle of a season? Is this a school yard game where we can make up the rules as we go? Thanks again Bud Selig, yet another head scratcher!
One last thing of note for the 2008 MLB season and that is the historical last games played. For perhaps one of the biggest baseball cities in the country the New York fans saw the last games played in both the Mets in Shea stadium and the Yankees in Yankee stadium. Both teams closed out their historical stadiums this year with no playoff appearances a downer for all I am sure. Sorry NY fans there’s always next year
