Well I hope everyone enjoyed the major league baseball season of 2008. I know that I certainly enjoyed the season even though I am a Yankee fan and they were a bust this year. The season was still great fun to watch with all the unexpected playoff twists and turns and the really unexpected winner of the World Series the Philadelphia Phillies. Now that we have all moved on to our winter sports of football and hockey is there really all that much to be looking for when it comes to baseball headlines?
It turns out that this winter has been pretty eventful when it comes to watching for baseball headlines. There are a lot of marquee free agent names that are on the market and a lot of teams in the running for revamping their lineups. Player like Sabathia, Teixeira, K-Rod, Ramirez, Milton Bradley and Peavy just to name a few and all the big money spending teams that you would expect to be in the mix are there front and center again.
The winter meetings just began this week and the most notable news to come out of Las Vegas so far came from Hall of Fame Pitcher Greg Maddux as he announced his retirement today. I hope all true baseball fans realize what an amazing career we all got to watch over the last 23 seasons! Twenty three seasons, wow that is just unheard of especially for a pitcher of his caliber truly an amazing career to have watched.
The other bit of baseball news that has hit the headlines recently is regarding what I can only classify as a sorry state of affairs. The sorry story is that of Barry Bonds who’s court battle to try and stay out of jail continues against the Feds. The Feds just dropped four charges against Bonds but he sill has ten more against him and he is still facing up to two years in prison. I am so tired of this story and the dragging on that is going on in the legal system, the whole thing is terrible no matter how you look at it. What are your thoughts on the whole Barry Bonds legal battle? Let it play out and see if he can get off or bring it to a jury already and end this nonsense?
